Flanagan remaking Darabont’s The Mist, taking it in new direction?

It looks like the greatest thing to happen Stephen King since clown make-up, Mike Flanagan, is setting his sights on another adaptation of the author’s work.

This time, though, unlike the work he’s done [and doing] – Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, The Dark Tower, Life of Chuck, Carrie – it seems he’s remaking a story that has already been done twice in the last decade, once as a superb movie and once as a so-so TV series.

So, it’s not exactly material crying out to be redone. Yes, Flanagan is remaking The Mist, based on the novella published in King’s horror anthology, Skeleton Crew.

Mike Flanagan talks drawing closer to The Dark Tower series happening

The story of a Maine town engulfed in a mysterious mist that contains unspeakable monsters and creatures is one that taps into our primal fears of the unknown and unseen terrors, the things that lurk in the dark and what we would do to survive. The 2007 movie, directed by Frank Darabont, is a classic horror and has an ending that devastates, no matter how many times you see it; however, I wouldn’t bet on it being in Flanagan’s movie, as it was created just for the movie.

With Darabont’s movie still being held in such high regard – seriously, if you’ve not seen it, go watch it now – many are asking why it’s being remade but Flanagan, on social media, has assured fans that if there wasn’t a reason, he wouldn’t do it, adding: “I love Darabont’s movie and there’s zero point in remaking it, which is why I’m going in a different direction.”

Stephen King’s The Jaunt being developed as a TV series

I have faith in Flanagan and what he does with King’s work, but I also have a theory that officially or unofficially, he seems to be picking his projects wisely. His dream project is The Dark Tower, and all the projects he’s taking on, Doctor Sleep, Carrie, and now The Mist, connect to The Dark Tower (all King’s works do) in very particular ways and it wouldn’t surprise if he’s treating IT and IT: Welcome to Derry as part of this (unofficial) universe too.

But hey, that’s just my opinion.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
