Nathan Fillion talks timeline of new Firefly animated show and why it was chosen

Last weekend we got the news that a new Firefly animated series was in development, continuing the story of the good ship Serenity, and now we’re learning a bit more about the why of the project and good news about the distribution of the show once it’s made.

In a new interview, Fillion addresses the reboot and why it’s set between the show’s original and the movie, which wrapped up the story: “You can’t bring back Firefly without bringing back all of Firefly,” he said.

The star is addressing the fact that, in Serenity, Alan Tudyk’s Wash and Ron Glass’ Shepherd Book were killed and also, sadly, Glass has passed in real life in the years between, so setting the new show before those events gives them a unique opportunity to bring back the whole crew: “What I can do is go back in time, bring the gang back together, and give people what they want, which is more Firefly. After Serenity, it’s not the same. I didn’t want to do this without my buddy Alan. And you know that’s a reason why animation is key, because Ron Glass is no longer with us. I like to think, in my heart of hearts, that this is something that he would have wanted.”

He adds that, aside from everything else, Serenity marked the end of the story for the crew, and they had no interest in going beyond that: “We toyed with the idea of spending some time in the show after the events of Serenity, and I honestly have no interest. I think Serenity was our wonderful farewell to what was an incredible opportunity. Had we only had one more chance to do something, that was it, and it was beautiful. I can’t compete with that.”

One of the issues that raised eyebrows when the animated show was announced was the fact that there was, as of then, no distributor attached; however, on their podcast, stars Fillion and Alan Tudyk said there is now a lot of interest in distributing the show. “I don’t think we’re having any difficulty getting the appointment now. You know what I mean? Our foot in the door,” Fillion said, with Tudyk adding: “Conversations are being had.”

So, there you have it, it looks like the Firefly show is probably going to happen, finally giving up more stories from our favourite ship and crew in the ‘verse.

Ok, I know some people hate the animated idea but, given the schedules and passage of time, it’s probably the best way to continue the story and, who knows, maybe if the show is a success – and I really hope it is – we might eventually see the crew back in live-action but for now, in a world where stories can continue in books, games, TV shows or animation, it’s just good to know that someone hasn’t forgotten about the most unfairly cancelled show in TV history.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
