Star Wars to embrace internet spoilers?

April 27th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

It’s a weird and cool age we live in. While many movie studios try to keep set photos and spoilers from leaking online, other embrace it. Marc Webb and Bryan Singer, the directors of Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Day of Future Past respectively, come to mind as they are known for tweeting out images. But I would have never guessed that Star Wars would seek to do the same. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy says they do.

In an interview with Screenslam,  Kathleen Kennedy was asked how important secrecy would be for Lucasfilm, she replied:

“We talk about that all the time. I think the whole issue of confidentiality is gonna be fascinating as we move into making the movie. If we’re shooting anything outside, it’s almost impossible to not have things end up on the Internet. So my feeling is, you need to embrace that, especially with the fans around something like Star Wars. We need to recognize that they’re important to the process, acknowledge that there are things you’re gonna want to make sure they get to know. So I think that’s something we’re going to monitor and pay attention to and think differently about.”

Taking into account that Disney/Lucasfilm has been very secretive about Star Wars: Episode VII so far, Kathleen Kennedy’s comments come as a surprise. At this point, it’s still unclear whether the original cast is really returning or not. So it’s hard to think they will really embrace spoilers. I guess she means they will release very controlled pieces of information and images to keep fans interested. Like we need any help.

I wonder though how much information is too much? Remember the days when you went to a movie and you knew next to nothing about it?
