The big news of the week…X-Force movie! Bleeding Cool broke the news that 20th Century FOX had registered the domain name xforcemovie.com. On the heels of that website Comic Book Resources (comicbookresources.com) stated that FOX was ready to reveal the idea of an expanded X-Men film Universe at San Diego Comic Con. Now The Hollywood Reporter is saying there’s a writer attached as well as a producer.
THR cites no sources, but they are stating that Kick Ass 2 scribe/director Jeff Wadlow has been tapped to write and that he will also have his eye on directing as well. THR also says that long time X-Men movie producer Lauren Donner will be producing X-Force as well.
Of course the most exciting news is the fact that names like Cable and Deadpool are being kicked around, though I am hesitant to see how the studio handles Deadpool. We all remember the sacrilege that was committed on the Merc with the Mouth in the Wolverine Origins movie, but their was quite a bit of drama after as well. Ryan Reynolds, who portrayed Deadpool in the Wolverine movie, made it is mission to give us a faithful adaptation of the character. He had writers and they were making good headway, until FOX got a hold of the script. Reynolds and company were going after a faithful R-rated version of Deadpool, while FOX wanted a toned down Merc. If they proceed with Deadpool sans Reynolds, are we going to be getting the PG-13 version FOX had in mind? Lord I hope not.
It also seems that FOX is trying to duplicate the success Disney has had with Marvel films by making a shared universe for their X-characters to play in. This sounds like a very wise move, though with only the X-Men characters, that sandbox will be a lot smaller than Disney’s. Of course, that’s okay with this comic nerd because the X-Characters are my favorite Marvel characters anyway, aside form Spider-Man, who Disney doesn’t own the film rights to either.
So there you have it folks, it sounds like this X-Force movie is picking up steam rather quickly. Stay tuned to The Nerd for more details as they come out.
