Idris Elba’s name comes up a lot in fan casting for comic book movie roles. Everything from Green Lantern John Stewart to Black Panther and even Batman. He’s already appeared in both Thor films as Heimdall, so how come he’s never gotten a franchise of his own?
Well, it almost happened. In an interview with The Huffington Post, Elba says he was previously in talks for Marvel’s Luke Cage.
When asked if there was a superhero he’d like to try, Elba replied:
“For Halloween, I wore Superman. And I was like, “I don’t mind this cape being behind me. [laughs]…But, no, other than that, I don’t really have any superhero that I like. There was talk about Luke Cage at one time — I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character. They were going to do it, but I don’t know what happened…”
When Elba was told that Marvel is now developing the character for a TV series on Netflix, he simply replied:
“That’s right, yeah.”
It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibilities that Elba could be up for the role again for the Netflix series, he does star in the Luther television series. It’s also unclear whether they’ll be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it remains to be seen if he could fit it into his schedule, after Mandela I have a feeling he’ll be getting a lot of offers.
Who do you want to see play Luke Cage in the series and who in a movie?
