Legendary CEO: “We’re keen on Pacific Rim sequel”

March 21st, 2014 by Marc Comments

Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull has been chatting to the guys at Collider about the possibility of a sequel to one of our favourite movies of the last couple of years, Pacific Rim… and the word is good.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim remains one of Legendary’s highest grossing movies and was very well received by audiences and critics alike. It’s big, loud, exciting and fun and Tull seems keen to create a franchise out of it as it was a one-off movie that had no built in audience, but was based on the whole mythology of giant monsters vs machine or Kaiju and Mecha.

Talking to tull, Collider asked what the status of the sequel was and he told them: “We love being in business with Guillermo and frankly that movie, if you look it up, did I think more business than the first X-Men, did more than Batman Begins, our first movie, did more than Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious, Star Trek- so for a movie that was an original property that we made up it’s done really well. It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it.”

Very positive words indeed. We’ll keep our fingers crossed because if there’s one mythology we want to see explored it’s that of Pacific Rim. Are we on our own? Let us know your thoughts below

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
