Marvel announces Death of Wolverine this September

April 26th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Marvel Comics has announced that that come this September, Wolverine will be no more. Already without his legendary healing factor in the monthly Wolverine title, the events of the past year will come to a head in a four-issue mini-series titled Death of Wolverine from writer Charles Soule and artist Steve McNiven.

Michael Marts, an executive editor at Marvel overseeing the project, explains that the idea to kill off one of the most iconic characters in comic books emerged out of one of Marvel’s famous semi-annual creative retreats:

“For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor. He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for hundred years?”

Charles Soule explains that the series is meant, in part, as a retrospective for both the character and the fans:

“He’s reflecting on his own life as he’s reflecting on his own death. We wanted to have the reader do that at the same time. In each issue, we’re focusing on a different aspect, or a different quintessential Wolverine.”

The first issue will be released on September 3rd and the remaining three issues will drop that month as well.
