Contradicting a story which was doing the rounds earlier in the week, it now seesm that Peter Jackson directing an episode of Doctor Who is only a possibility at this stage.
Speaking to SFX, Moffat said that the only issue presented by getting Jackson to work on an episode is finding the time in the director’s schedule – “I think it will happen at some point,” he said. “He’s still incredibly busy on The Hobbit. I’ve spoken to him face to face, and he would like to do one. I mean, he can do what the hell he likes — he owns New Zealand!”
The showrunner went on to say “He’s a nice guy; he quite often drops me a line after a show goes out. He’s into it — it’s just, ‘Can you make it work?’ ”
Its no secret that the New Zealand born director is a major fan of the sci-fi series and has been wanting to helm an episode for many years, wanting to do it for love, not money. Oh, but he’ll take a Dalek – “We give him a Dalek and then he’ll direct an episode,” Moffat said. “That’s what he wants.”
Jackson, who owns two classic era Daleks, later revealed that he’d love to see an episode set in New Zealand which involved the national rugby team, the All Blacks. “Something to do with the All Blacks versus the Daleks,” he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “There’s a good story in there, although obviously the All Blacks would have to win!”
Peter Jackson is currently working on the third and final Hobbit film, after which he will produce the TinTin sequels, the first of which is due out in 2016, so it is feasible that he could find the time to work on Who. It was previously reported earlier in the week that Jackson had been locked in to direct the series 9 two part finale episodes, although whether there is any truth to these reports remains to be seen.
