If, like me, you loved Project Hail Mary, then after you read the book, there’s a third way to enjoy the story of Ryland Grace and Rocky on its way.
Hayakawa Publishing has revealed the first look, above, at the Manga version of Andy Weir’s sci-fi novel and it looks stunning.
Relatively new artist Hajime Go (号一) is responsible for the art and the sample pages that have been sent to Weirs are, in his own words: “Fantastic and Fun and Varied.”
The Manga is being overseen – the science stuff – SF writer/translator/scriptwriter noted SF writer/translator/scriptwriter.
And look, it’s not as if there’s not going to be plenty of content to fill the Manga book, as directors of the movie, Chris Miller and Phil Lord in a new interview, revealed that the movie was originally much, much longer and they disn’t know what to cut, but the studio wasn’t having it.
The original cut was four hours and the filmmakers showed it to fellow filmmakers, to try to get advice on how to cut it down because the four-hour runtime was “embarrassing” and they’d been given a note by the studio to “Get it way shorter”.
“Our first official test screening went great, but we do a lot of earlier screenings for friends and family and other filmmakers and writers,” Chris Miller explained, “This movie was massive. When we finally got the assembly cut down to under four hours long, we subjected some filmmaker friends of ours to a three hour and 45 minute cut of the movie, which was embarrassing.”

Phil Lord added: “You just don’t know how the scenes are going to land with an audience. We thought everything was charming, but some of those charming things didn’t land.”
So, yeah, there’s going to be a wealth of content for the Manga… interesting to see in the (gorgeous) page above, that Grace is standing, which implies that the adaptation may borrow from the movie in which Rocky gives the ship gravity, a notable difference from the novel.
Thoughts? I know you have them, and I wanna hear ’em all.
