FIRST LOOK: M.A.S.K (Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand) gets Energon comic series

When M.A.S.K leader Matt Tracker appeared in the Energon Universe’s GI Joe book last summer, I revealed that a standlone M.A.S.K book couldn’t be far off… and now, yes!, here it is.

For those that don’t know, the Energon Universe is a comic universe from Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman and his Skybound publisher, which contains Kenner/Hasbro’s GI Joe and Transformers 9also a unique book called Void Rivals which is superb and does interlace with the other books) in one ongoing story and now, one of the coolest toy lines and animated shows ever, M.A.S.K (Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand) is set to join that universe with its own comic book.

I’ve always thought that M.A.S.K’s gimmick of vehicles that appear normal but, at the flick of a switch, turn into attack vehicles, was the obvious bridge between GI Joe (Remember when they were Action Force here in the UK, kids?) and Transformers.

The new Energo series is from writer Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns/GI Joe: Destro), artist Pye Parr (New Gods), colorist Pierluigi Casolino and letterer Rus Wooton.

The world is becoming a terrifying place.

Matt Trakker needs your help saving it. Enter M.A.S.K. — a network of specialists ready to respond to the next global emergency.

At a moment’s notice, Trakker and his agents can deploy bleeding-edge technology that converts their vehicles–and their drivers–into the ultimate weapon.

But Miles Mayhem and V.E.N.O.M. are one step ahead in a secret arms race, scouring the globe for deadly weapons from this planet and beyond, ready to sell out the entire human race. Only M.A.S.K. can stop them… but will Trakker’s own secrets jeopardize their entire mission?

The Energon Universe to expand as Visionaries and M.A.S.K confirmed

Artist Parr said in a statement: “80s sports cars! Jets! Lasers! Robots! M.A.S.K. has everything that I love to read, watch, and draw, and my inner 12-year-old fought to the surface and made me scream loudly in the meeting when I was offered this gig.

“Never have I more bitterly regretted selling my beloved childhood toys, but the chance to rebuild all that stuff on the page has more than made up for it, and I can’t wait to see where Dan takes us in the Energon Universe.”

If you’re not reading the Energon books, you should get on to your comic dealer asap and get either back issues or the trades because honestly, it’s the best thing in comics today, I kid you not.

M.A.S.K No. 1 will also feature an Energon Universe blind bag allowing fans a chance to get any of the solicited covers, intermixed at varying degrees of rarity. There will also be rare surprise covers.

M.A.S.K hits comic shelves on June 3rd.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
