Robert Kirkman, the man behind The Walking Dead, Invincible and the Energon Universe, has taken to the stage to reveal what’s next for Skybound and Image Comics.
First up, with the confirmation of Invincible’s return for a fifth season, Kirkman revealed that The Americans star Matthew Rhys will be joining the cast to voice the reptilian villain Dinosaurus! He also revealed that the upcoming season four will see Invincible going to hell, literally.
Joining the Invincible Universe: Battle Beast comic book, Kirkman also revealed that he will be “putting a fresh coat of paint” on Capes, ‘the short-lived series about superheroes who treat crime-fighting as a 9-to-5. In addition to revamping dialogue and art, the series is slated to continue into 2026 with Benito Cereno (Blood and Thunder) helping on writing duties.’

Kirkman also confirmed that he is working on a book called Skinbreaker with David Finch, someone he’s wanted to work with for years. More details on this will come along at a later date.
While I am a little disappointed to report that the much rumoured Energon Universe animated series was not confirmed or discussed (I remain optimistic though), there was news – and a very cool trailer, below – on the Energon Universe, which is by far my favourite thing I’m reading right now.
Kirkman and Skybound developing Energon Universe animated series?
Kirkman is taking over the Transformers corner of the Energon Universe (EU) along with Dan Mora and Andrei Bressan for Void Rivals #25. This new collaboration will kick off a new chapter in the EU called the Quintesson War. While that is happening in the cosmic side of the EU, here on Earth, the GI Joe book will see the beginning of the Dreadnought War.
I had grown very bored with a lot of comics but I picked up the Energon Universe trade paper backs about six months ago and have been hooed ever since; the books bring back many of our childhood favourutes but inject just enough adult themes – people die when they come up against Transformers, the Dreadnoughts have skinned bodies in their shed – to make these stories fresh and exciting for the adults we have become. Mostly.
I can’t wait to see where it all goes next.
