So, it’s fair to say that, like most people, we loved Bumblebee (here) and we’re excited to see where it goes next… after all, there was talk of this being the last Transformers movie in the Bayverse before a full reboot.
But given that ‘Bee is pretty much a reboot and goes a longlong way to giving the fans what they’ve desired since 2007, it’s not surprising that it looks like Bumblebee IS the reboot that was planned all along.
So, what’s next?
Well, if like me, you were screaming for more Cybertron stuff in the movie, then buckle up because it’s coming.
Producer Lorenzo diBonaventura had this to say: “We actually have an animated movie in the works that will tell the whole Cybertron mythology. The fans will love that.”
We’re really hoping that when he says animated he means CGI, similar to the look the planet had in Bumblebee.
Next up, we’re getting the biggest hero in the known universe in his own movie: “We’re trying to figure out an [Optimus Prime solo movie].
“It will be hard with Optimus, he is always right, very stoic and is a man of few words … It is kind of like saying, ‘Lets do a movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi?’ But how much is there to say about Obi-Wan? It is not so easy.”
On top of that, Bumblebee, no surprise, is looking likely to have a sequel too with writer Christina Hodson looking to return: “We shall see. I have told them they can call me anytime. I know what I would want to do with it.”
As for franchises, having been involved in Harry Potter, Lethal Weapon and The Matrix, diBonaventura has insight into making Tranformers a proper franchise: “When you start out assuming a franchise you are in deep trouble. You better make a damn good movie and don’t think of the rest of it.
“And it is making an assumption that none of the audience could ever guess, which is the audience reaction. With this, we knew the audience was telling us, ‘Less Transformers.’ You can’t know that unless they have seen something.”
“The best franchises are a living breathing thing. We knew we could do whatever we wanted with this. From the look, to the time period to the aesthetic to what we were trying to accomplish to the very small plot. There wasn’t a big plot. It was important. But we were constantly moving on.”
With this all in mind, we hope they follow their own advice and keep the stories small and personal… until the arrival of Unicorn. Then they can Thanos the heck out of that!
