From the folder marked ‘do we really need this?’ comes the news that a John Rambo movie is being developed.
The new movie aims to tell the story of John Rambo, played in the movies by Sylvester Stallone, before we meet him in the original 1982 classic, First Blood.
Millennium Media is currently developing the movie, best known for the Has Fallen, Hitman’s Bodyguard and Expendables franchises, so they’re no strangers to big actions series and Jalmari Helander, director of Rare Exports and Sisu, is set to direct from a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam).
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil TV series was killed just as it was about to start filming
According to Deadline, the movie ‘will be the origin story of a young John Rambo during the Vietnam War, with casting in early stages. We understand Sylvester Stallone is aware of the project but is not currently involved. We hear the door is open from producers should a fitting role arise.’
The Rambo character has spanned five movies and while very different by the end of the run, was originally based on David Morell’s novel First Blood – the original movie follows the novel closely and sees Vietnam veteran Rambo coming up against a cruel small town sheriff who forces him to fight for his life, bringing war to small town America. The original movie is an absolute cracker, if you haven’t seen it, you really should.
Millennium President Jonathan Yunger said: “This project is a tribute to one of the best franchises in movie history that will appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences alike. With Jalmari Helander at the helm — a filmmaker of exceptional vision and energy — we’ve found the perfect director to deliver a high-concept action-packed experience.”
If the project goes ahead, it will indeed be director Helander’s involvement that has me most excited.
Opinions? Thoughts? I know you have ’em and I wanna here ’em all!
