LISTEN: Ryan Reynolds talks about his R-rated Star Wars movie pitch

Not too long ago, before Andor season 2 kicked off, showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed that he believed a Star Wars horror movie was in development and now noneother that Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars movie, having just enjoyed a massive hit with the MCU’s first R-rated movie, Deadpool and Wolverine.

In a new episode of The Box Office Podcast, below, the star discussed his idea for a Star Wars project.

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated “Star Wars” property? It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters. There’s a wide range of characters you could use,’” he says.

“And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.”

Ok, so he’s not suggesting R-rated in the way the Deadpool movies are R-rated but something altogether different.

“I’m not saying I want to be in it. That would be a bad fit,” he said. “I’d want to produce and write or be a part of behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity really with ‘Star Wars’ because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.”

I’ve always said that Star Wars could easily lend itself to more adult tales but let’s not forget that, although done with a more family-friendlt slant, Star Wars has health with zombies, witches, the walking dead and so much more, so maybe the R-rating isn’t necessary to tell the more adult stories, after all, the attempted rape in Andor season 2 and then Kingpin ripping someone’s head apart with his bare hands in Daredevil: Born Again season 1 were both too dark for these worlds in my opinion.

I know you have thoughts and I want to hear them all…
