Radio Silence helming new The Mummy movie with Fraser and Weisz returning!

Exciting news tonight as it seems we’re heading back to 1999 as Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are returning for a new Mummy movie!

Yes, Rick and Evie are returning for more action and adventures for the fourth movie in the series, after 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in which Weisz was replaced by actress Maria Bello played Evie but was not well received and marked the end of the series. On a side note, I’m hearing that the new movie may ignore that third entry and pick up some twenty-five years after the second movie, The Mummy Returns.

But, even more excitingly, while the first two movies were directed by Stephen Sommers, this new sequel will be helmed by FTN favourites Radio Silence, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who made Ready or Not, Abigail and brought Scream back with the fifth and sixth movies.

This is very exciting news!

While Tom Cruise was brought on to reboot The Mummy in 2017, a movie which it was hoped would kick start the ‘Dark Universe’, which would feature Universal’s greatest movies including Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon and more, sadly that movie (which I liked, even though it was a tonal mess) was a flop and the Dark Universe crashed before it even really started.

It has me wondering, could Universal be trying the Dark Universe again, only this time with Fraser and Weisz kickstarting it? Not for nothing but I would be totally onboard for that as I always liked the idea of the monster universe.

Just please don’t bring Fraser back and have Rick O’Connell be a bitter old man who resents the past… that trope is tired now and we need our heroes from years ago to still be heroic. Cheers.

As of right now, there’s no further news and no word on if we’ll see Arnold Vosloo, John Hannah or Odeh Fehr returning but I’d imagine there will be conversations.

Interestingly, Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin has just finished making his The Mummy movie for Blumhouse and it’s being reported that it will no longer be called The Mummy but will be re-titled The Resurrected. Rumour had it that the movie may be being retitled due to early test screenings being poorly received but I would imagine this news might play a bigger part in that renaming.

Anyway, I think this is all great news but what are your thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em…
