In a real piece of ‘I did not see that coming’ news, the legend Sam Raimi has revealed that one of his most cult movies is finally getting a sequel.
Well, technically a third sequel.
Yes, in case you haven’t guessed, it looks like a new Darkman movie is in discussions and honestly, almost forty years later, I am here for it!
In a new interview, the famous director, whose new movie, Send Help opens this weekend and is getting solid reviews, discussed the possibility of a new Darkman movie: “Ghost House Pictures, the company I work with, is trying to make it [Darkman sequel] right now. We have a script and two great directors, but we still have some difficulties with the financing. It always happens the same in the movie business.”
The original Darkman is a low-budget, B-movie treat that crosses the superhero/sci-fi/comedy/horror genres in a glorious mess. Hitting cinemas in 1990, the original movie starred a young Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand and told the story of Neeson’s Dr Peyton Westlake, who is horribly disfigured by gangsters and is now developing near superhero strength. Thankfully, he’s also been developing a synthetic skin that he can use to disguise himself as anyone, which he does as he sets out to find out what happened to him and punish those involved.
It’s dire. But also delightful.
You may have noticed that above, I mentioned that this new movie will be either the first or third sequel. Well, this is because Darkman already had two sequels, with Raimi as producer. These were Darkman II: The Return of Durant in 1995, and in 1996 we got Darkman III: Die Darkman, Die – they also had comicbook adaptations. Both movies were direct-to-video, and fans consider them to be up there with Robocop 3 and Highlander II.
If you catch my drift.
No word on if this new movie will be a sequel, a reboot or something inbetween and given that Neeson is now 73, I would doubt he’d be up for a return… although, the man does love to work, so you can never rule him out.
So, a new Sam Raimi Darkman movie? It could be just the ticket in our superhero-fatigued world.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear em’ all.
