Supermassive’s Scream game is no longer happening…

You may recall that around Hallowe’en 2023 I was pretty excited to report on a Scream video game in development that would take place within the movies’ storyline and be canon to the over all story.

Well, it’s been quiet ever since until now… and it’s not good news.

At the time, I reported that a report on the game stated: “The game will follow a story pattern,  which will see players take on the role of a victim/survivor in a decision-based format. But the game will receive several modes and one of those modes will allow survivors to take  on the role as one of the killers and play out certain narratives from the killer’s perspective.

New Scream video game to be a prequel to the 1996 original movie?

“[the game] won’t follow a timeline set within the Scream movies universe, It is  apparently going to be going back before the events of 1996, and could serve as a prequel to the origins of the Ghostface mask.”

A Scream prequel? possibly telling the story of Cotton Weary, the night Sidney Prescott’s mother, Maureen, was murdered, setting the whole Scream story into gear? Oh, yes, please.

But, alas, the game was definitely in development but has sadly been cancelled before the killer’s even put the mask on.

According to Scream channel Beyond the Mask, who broke the original story and now has the update, Supermassive Games’ Paul Martin has confirmed that the game was in development and that it is now dead.

Scream 8 confirmed and preparing for production

He confirms that a Scream game was pitched in 2023 and was ultimately scrapped due to licensing issues – in fact, they didn’t even try to get the rights as the game was to be set in the canon universe of the movies.

He says that, while it wasn’t his pitch, there was a big idea for the game with a story and plan in place but Supermassive didn’t want to commit.

Aghhhhhhh!

Reading between the lines, it would seem to suggest that a game where a Ghostface stalks random teens that isn’t beholden to any pre-existing lore is a much easier game to make than one that needs to stick to established timelines, stories, characters etc…

It’s such a shame because I’d imagine this would have been devoured by the fans and, as someone who rarely games anymore (dad of two), even I was stoked for a Scream game.

Thoughts? I know you have ’em and I wanna hear them all…
