Sigourney Weaver sets target on Ellen Ripley return

Could Sigourney Weaver be set to return to space to fight the scariest monster known to mankind?

So, if you cast your minds back almost a decade, to 2016, when District 9’s Neill Blomkamp was developing a new Alien movie set to star Weaver as Ellen Ripley again, in a role she hadn’t played since 1997’s Alien: Resurrection, nearly a full two decades earlier.

Alas, that project hit the rocks shortly after and never got off the ground, and then, in 1993, at the age of 74, Weaver admitted she didn’t think she’d ever play Ripley again.

Well, that may well be about to change. Again.

Sigourney Weaver doesn’t believe she’ll ever play Aliens’ Ellen Ripley again

Now, Weaver is saying she’s met with Disney about a possible return and Aliens and Alien 3 writer Walter Hill has written a 50-page treatment that she has read: “Walter Hill is a very good friend of mine, and he wrote 50 pages where Ripley would be now, and they are quite extraordinary. I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox, Disney, or whoever it is now.

“I said I have never felt the need. I was always like, ‘Let her rest, let her recover.’ But what Walter has written seems so true to me as very much about the society that would incarcerate someone who has tried to help mankind.”

On the storyline, Weaver gave away very little but revealed that Ripley is still a problem Waylan-Yutani can’t get rid of: “She’s a problem to them, so she’s sort of tucked away. Anyway, I think it’s a very strong first 50 pages, and I’m thinking about working with Walter to see what the rest of the story would be.”

“We’re just taking it one step at a time. It is very interesting, but it’s very early days,” she concludes.

Of course, we all know by now too that in last year’s Alien: Romulus, Ripley’s escape pod, The Narcissus, can be seen on the space station, meaning there’s a part of her story that took place between Alien and Aliens that we have so far not been told… although, I doubt that will play into Hill’s story, though you never know.

In related news, Weaver looks set to join Sophie Turner’s Lara Croft in Amazon’s new Tomb Raider series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge. What the role is, is still a mystery as of now.
