It looks like, days after it was seemingly dead, Happy Death Day 3 is moving ahead with the director and star both confirming it.
When the original Happy Death Day hit in 2017, the time-traveling slasher introduced us to Tree and a new final girl was born; the sequel, Happy Death Day 2U came along quickly in 2019 and we’ve been waiting ever since for the third installment and, frankly, more of Jessica Rothe as Tree.
The first movie saw Tree reliving the day of her death over and over again, waking up, always killed by the same baby-faced killer, and using the time loop to find out who was murdering her and why. The sequel took place on the same day and this time, Tree got closer to finding out why she was stuck in the time loop, setting up a much bigger world to be explored by the franchise but then… nothing.
“I’ll be right back!” Matthew Lillard confirmed returning for Scream VII
Both Rothe and director Christopher Landon have spoken out many times about the third movie happening – and not happening – but now both are saying it’s finally coming together.
Just a couple of weeks back, Landon said of the third movie: “It’s been an interesting journey because both movies [the first two movies in the series] were financially very successful, so I think it’s left us and a lot of fans scratching their heads as to why we weren’t allowed to make a third. But I don’t control the purse strings, I don’t call those shots. That’s entirely up to Blumhouse and Universal, if they have an appetite or interest in it.”
That didn’t sound good at all, however, just a could of days ago, at American Cinematheque, both Rothe and Landon were asked if they could give an update on the third movie happening to which Rothe said: “The third movie is moving forward.”
UPDATED: Joel McHale joins Scream VII cast as Sidney’s husband Mark… but not the one you think
Landon confirmed the news, confirmed: “It is moving forward.”
I have long been a supporter of the third movie, and this is very welcome news at FTN HQ, indeed.
The movies played out like Groundhog Day meets Scream and was a lot of fun but the semi-cliffhanger ending has left us waiting for an ending or, as Rothe said, a new beginning. Either way, Tree deserves her happy ending and the world deserves more Tree.
