I remember a time, not a million years ago, when having a new Star Wars movie on the horizon, especially one starring FTN favourite Ryan Gosling, would have the world pacing for details or a teaser, but it seems that we’re so far into the Disney era of the franchise, that there’s nothing to be excited about anymore.
But that would be wrong, I think.
Firstly, we’re only four months out from the Mandalorian and Grogu movie, which is shockingly under the radar of the fandom and has recently been hammered by the viewing figures of the Masters of the Universe trailer, but I honeslty think that, yes, the Mando and Grogu movie will be great but I’m also pretty excited for Reynolds’ debut in the Star Wars universe too.
Set for May 2027, Starfighter is directed by Night at the Museum and Deadpool and Wolverine’s Shawn Levi and is written by The Wrecking Crew’s Jonathan Tropper, and they’re both talking about what we can expect in this all-new chapter in the Star Wars story.
Plot details revealed on Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter movie
“Shawn’s made a phenomenal movie,” Tropper says, “[and] Gosling is amazing to watch and I’m super excited to just bring new characters and new worlds to the franchise. You know, we’re doing something totally new and that’s really exciting.”
The movie also stars Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams and there has been a lot rumours about who they may be playing and if/how it ties into prior movies, but now that seems unlikely: “[it’s] not a prequel, not a sequel, just gives us the Star Wars DNA that we love but with an adventure that’s all new,” Levy says, keen t push forward the idea that this is a fully standalone story.
Tropper goes on: “It’s just so much bigger than anything I’ve done because of the history, because of the mythology, and because of the apparatus that comes with it. It was always exciting and had a million pinch me moments but at the same time, it was a lot of work.”
Once again, it’s definitely a new Star Wars story, says Tropper: “Fans should expect something new and different, but in very much the spirit of the original ‘Star Wars’ movies. We really wanted adventure, excitement, wish fulfillment and the joy that we felt as little kids seeing those first versions of the movies. Anything that grows for generations develops a lot more mythology and weight in history. I think we just wanted to go back to the joy and excitement of how it felt when we were kids seeing these movies.”
WATCH: New trailer drops for The Mandalorian and Grogu movie!
Back in June last year, I wrote: Gosling’s character is protecting his young nephew, played by Flynn Grey, from a villain, likely played by Maxxxine’s Mia Goth. What the villain wants, we don’t know. Will it involve the Force or Jedi? Unlikely, but not impossible.
Well, now we know something… There will be Jedi and lightsaber fights. And Tom Cruise is involved!
Recently, Levy revealed that two big names came to set and one of them got involved: “Last week Steven Spielberg was here,” Levy said, “and now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.”
It seems that Cruise, right, filmed a fight between ‘several’ mysterious characters.
What? Several characters?! Are Matt Smith and Mia Goth playing Sith? Is Gosling a Jedi?!? What is this movie, and where does it fit in the whole story? What Jedi exist at this period, between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens? Is Ahsoka still out there? Who else is?
I’m not going to lie, I’m not Levy’s biggest fan, but I do love Gosling, and I still love Star Wars, so yeah, I’m excited for this and The Mandalorian on Grogu, which arrives this summer. Let’s hope that faith is well placed, huh?
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
