WATCH: Paul Dano talks Gotham and adapting his Riddler: Year One comic for screen

January 29th, 2026 by Marc Comments

In a new interview with Clique, actor Paul Dano discusses his time playing The Riddler in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, including if he would like to see his self-penned Riddler: Year One prequel One made into a movie or series.

The Batman has an extended universe already with The Penguin TV series but it also has a novel, Before the Batman, and a really rather superb comic series/graphic novel, Riddler: Year One, which was written by Dano himself and it’s dark, brooding and pretty great.

I read it when The Penguin series was airing and the two went together really well, Dano has a great understanding of this take on Gotham and the people in it and the book is an essential read for fans of Matt Reeves’ universe.

Telling the story of why Dano’s Edward Nashton became the Riddler, the novel sees his idealistic characteer caught up in a web of corruption which eventually results in him turning to the dark side as he builds an online army of followers, including, he hopes, Batman.

But would he be interested in seeing the comic adapted like The Penguin?

“Why not?” he says, “If we can do something really good. You gotta keep the bar high. That’s one of the things I liked about Matt Reeves and I, we’re both obsessive, so as long as we can make something we care about.”

He discusses his love of Gotham and the character and when he’s asked if he’s returning for The Batman Part II, he acts pretty cagey and refuses to answer.

I’d be 100% on for watching an adaptation of Riddler: Year One, it’s a great story and I think it would work really well on the small  – or big – screen.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
