WATCH: Sylvester Stallone confirms involvement in John Rambo prequel

March 9th, 2026 by Marc Comments

I hated the idea of a Rambo prequel or anyone else playing the character, but once I learned that Sizu director Jalmari Helander was helming it, my opinion changed.

And while I still remain neutral on the casting of Noah Centineo, good news today as we got a message from the creator of Rambo, and the man himself, Sylvester Stallone, confirming he’s read the script and is involved as a producer, and that he’ll ‘see you at the movies’.

This is great news because Stallone created the series and this will be the sixth in the franchise and the first without Stallone as the iconic hero and it will go right back to the beginning; when we first met John Rambo in 1982’s First Blood, he was returning from Vietnam, a broken man, this will tell the story of how he became that man who wanted nothing more than to be left alone.

Stallone had, in the past expressed interest in making a Rambo prequel himself, using CGI and digital effects to deage himself. As for the story, he said at the time: “We see Rambo as the nicest guy in school. He goes to Vietnam, he thinks it three week hit-and-run, but he got tortured. He changes.”

It’s likely, with Stallone’s involvement, that this is still the movie we’re getting to one extend or another.

John Rambo movie officially in production from director of Sizu

Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair said: “Sylvester Stallone knows the character of John Rambo better than anyone, and Lionsgate has had the good fortune of partnering with Sly for more than 20 years on this legendary IP. His participation is the final, critical piece to John Rambo, and we’re thrilled to have his involvement.”

John Rambo also stars Yao (Sinners), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Jefferson White (Yellowstone), and Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus).

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
