Kirkman and Skybound developing Energon Universe animated series?

A new report from Bleedingcool has suggested that Robert Kirkman and Skybound Comics are developing an Energo Universe animated series and, if this is true and it’s half as good as the comics, then we’re in for a real treat!

For those who don’t know, the Energon Universe is Kirkman and Skybound’s ongoing comic unvierse that includes the original Void Rivals comics and the connected Transformers and GI Joe books (and soon M.A.S.K?) and it’s a fresh retelling of the origins of the Cybertronians and the Joes and it’s a bit more adult than you’re used to and it’s uttelry superb.

According to the new report, ‘the show will be based on the hit Energon Universe comic books now published through Image Comics. Transformers and GI Joe comic rights moved to Skybound after Hasbro pulled them from IDW Publishing.’

The Energon Universe to expand as Visionaries and M.A.S.K confirmed

Word is that we will be getting an announcement next month at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC).

This makes sense when you bear in mind that Kirkman and Skybound are also the ones behind The Walking Dead and Invincible, and when you tie this to successful franchises like Transformers and GI Joe, it seems like this is a sure-fire winner.

The Energo Universe kicked off with the all-new book Void Rivals, which saw two members of warring alien races forming an uneasy truce – think Romeo and Juliet without the romance – which leads ot big secrets about their societies and also saw them meeting Transformers such as Jetfire, Springer and Hotrod at various points.

This led into the Transformers comics, and in there, you learn that Megatron has been captured by a villainous organisation called Cobra, and suddenly, you’re in a shared world that revolves around, you guessed it, Energon and how it can advance wars and technology.

It’s a fun series and the new adult slant lends itself so well to this rebooted universe and I’d be very, very keen to see what an animated series would do in this world… would it be like Invincible and adapt the comics blow for blow or would it be a story set within the same universe or something entirely new? Hard to say, but as a big, big fan, I can’t wait to find out if this is true.

Are you a fan of the Energon Universe? Let me know…
