We have a batch of character posters for the Stranger Things animated series, Tales From ’85, which arrives this April.
Among the familiar faces from the hit (live-action series) of Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max, we also see there’s a new character, Nikki Baxter, played by Odessa A’zion, who is described as ‘pivotal’ in the new series.
Showrunner Eric Robles says: “Nikki is a 14-year-old transfer student from the East Coast — by way of all over. She’s kind and loyal, unafraid to use her intimidating size and punk-rock look to warn off any bullies that might try to cross her.
“We wanted Nikki Baxter to help guide a new generation of viewers into the incredible world of Stranger Things. Nikki arrives in Hawkins at a pivotal moment — the government conspiracies, secrets, mysteries, and monsters that have stalked the tiny Indiana town for two seasons have seemingly been put to bed for the moment… she brings us — and the rest of the Stranger Things crew — an exciting, fresh roster of danger and monsters unlike anything our kids have ever faced before.”

It’s a weird decision to introduce a new character in a series that takes place between the regular show’s second and third years. Nikki has never been mentioned or seen in the main show… does this mean her character will meet a grim end?
The new animated series stars the voice talents of Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max, Luca Diaz as Mike, Ej (Elisha) Williams as Lucas, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Ben Plessala as Will, and Brett Gipson as Hopper. Additional voice cast includes Janeane Garofalo, and Lou Diamond Phillips.
Creators Matt and Ross Duffer say that one of their first ideas for a spinoff was an animated series “to evoke a feeling of an ’80s cartoon’”.
Interestingly, the series, which is CGI (em, like all the great animated shows), takes place in the winter of 1985, between seasons 2 and 3 of the series, although how it fits into the overall storyline is still to be revealed.
Something from the Upside Down must’ve survived… Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 premieres April 23, only on Netflix.
