In the world of comics, it’s very easy to have characters come across each other… Batman can meet Green Lantern, John Constantine or even Morpheus from the Sandman comics, however, when it comes to TV shows and movies, it’s a it more complicated with schedules, money and often even rights issues all playing a part.
But sometimes it doesn’t even get beyond the discussion stage… where the best ideas die before they even had a chance to breathe.
In the Sandman comics, at Morpheus’ wake, Martian Manhunter, Mr Miracle and Batman all make an appearance, left.
When it came to making the episode based on this event, The Wake, there were discussions about having Robert Pattinson’s Batman, from Matt Reeves’ movie, make an appearance.
Co-creator/showrunner of the now-ended Netflix show Allan Heinberg has now revealed that a cameo from Batman was discussed: “We talked about, ‘Does Robert Pattinson want to come to the funeral?’ Briefly, we did discuss that, but only briefly.”
Tidbit:
Pattinson’s Batman almost appeared in The Penguin series but, much like with the Sandman, it never really got to the stage where anything actually happened. The Batman director Matt Reeves has said on the appearance of the Dark Knight in the spinoff series: “We did talk about all that but we felt the best way to do this was to go on a grand exploration of a guy grabbing for power in this moment.”
There’s not question that having Pattinson’s Batman appear, even if it was just the cape and cowl from a distance, would have muddied the waters as far as canon and continuity go… would that mean Sandman takes place in the Reeves’ Batman universe?
Or, if it’s a different universe, does this actually open the door for multi-Pattinsons?
Could he then, as we speculated in the past, become the new DCU Batman?

It’s definitely fun that it was discussed and even considered briefly, but I reckon this would be an impossible take from beginning to end.
Pity… the speculation and fan theories alone would have made it worth the hassle.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em…
