Big ‘ooof!’ in the Dexter chat as it’s been revealed that, despite news of its renewal in April (here), prequel series Dexter: Original Sin has been cancelled at Paramount+, shocking the Dexter community because, despite not being a show anyone thought they wanted initially, it turned out to be rather brilliant and expanded the Dexter universe a great deal.
Now it seems that there’s some backpedalling being done, with Paramount saying the series was not renewed but was on a hiatus with no plans to start up again, and now it’s gone the way of the dodo.
It seems that Paramount are now focused on a second season of the currently airing Dexter: Resurrection, which stars the original Dexter Morgan, Michael C Hall, rather than the spinoff starring newcomer Patrick Gibson. This news seems to be confirmed by the confirmation that season two’s writers’ room is about to be opened up, with a season two renewal looking likely, given the positive reception of the series by critics and fans alike.
Dexter: Original Sin gets second season order at Showtime/Paramount+
Mind you, Original Sin was a big success with fans and critics.
So, what does this mean for the so-called ‘Dexterverse’?
Well, a few weeks back, Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and writer Scott Reynolds discussed the planned Trinity Killer spinoff, which would have seen the Dexter season three villain return in a prequel series explaining his origins, with original actor John Lithgow expected to return to narrate the episodes.
“It’s completely written,” Phillips said at the time, “John Lithgow has agreed to do the voiceover narration, but it’s not picked up yet.”
He went on to explain that the show’s success depended on Dexter: Resurrection, saying: “If Resurrection does well, I’m hopeful Chris McCarthy and the Paramount Global team will want to further expand the Dexterverse.”
“It’s not been greenlit, but it’s beautifully written. All 10 scripts are ready to go,” he concluded.
On top of this, Kristen Ritter, who appeared in Dexter Resurrection as serial killer Mia Lapierre, has hinted that there might be more spinoffs if fans like the characters: “I’m hoping audiences are like, ‘Give each of these characters a spinoff!’. They’re all really exciting, fresh, and original. We had such a blast playing them, and they feel iconic in this wild and twisted world.”
However, the only prequel/spinoff we know is definitely at planning stage right now is the Trinity show, but I really have to say that if Paramount is getting cold feet about the successful and well-received (and actually great) Original Sin, I can’t see them backing any further spinoffs.

Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness.
With the guidance of his father, Harry (Golden Globe® winner Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Patrick Dempsey, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson and special guest star, Sarah Michelle Gellar also star in this new series, with Michael C. Hall returning to voice the iconic inner monologue in Dexter Morgan’s head.
