Oh my, but Ridley Scott is a busy, busy man…

Currently working on the expansion of the Alien/Prometheus franchise, Scott has been talking about another of his classics that is set to be, em, expanded: Blade Runner.

With his new movie The Martian (read our review here) out this weekend, Scott is talking to many press-types and the topic of Blade Runner has been coming up (well, it’s only arguably one of the most important (sci-fi) movies ever made)!

“[When I gave Harrison the script, he] said ‘mehh’, and I said ‘no, read this’. And I think he said ‘this is the best script I’ve ever had’. We’ve been working on it for a couple of years”.

Encouraging words, indeed. But what of the story? Well, it looks like one of the biggest mysteries in the Blade Runner universe – if Deckard is a Replicant, how can he be in this sequel (if this all means nothing you need to stop what you’re doing and watch Blade Runner immediately) – is going to be addressed, with Scott saying that Deckard will have to face up to and admit that he’s a Replicant in the movie: “you’ll have to see the story. It’ll all make sense.”

The new movie will be set in the alternate Blade Runner universe in the year “2047, roughly… maybe 2050”.

He also confirmed that Ryan Gosling is going to appear: “As young as you can play Ryan Gosling. He’s 34, but he looks 27 when he’s doing his push-ups.” We’re not really sure what that means either.

Also interestingly, Scott was asked if he might make more sequels and he replied: “Everyone else is, so why not? I love to work. The French say ‘work to live’, and I live to work. I’m very lucky to have a job that I adore. All my kids do the same thing. Some of it’s trying, but it’s like being in professional sport. It’s so competitive you better keep bouncing the ball. You can’t rest”.

While we’re heartened by most, if not all this, we are hoping that he knows what he’s doing because Blade Runner is still top of our list of movies that shouldn’t/can’t have a sequel.

Thoughts?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
