Harrison Ford is fresh off reviving Han Solo for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and he’s set to exactly the same thing with his other iconic cinematic character: Indiana Jones. Walt Disney Pictures announced that both he and director Steven Spielberg would return for Indiana Jones 5 and restore the sense of adventure and splendour surrounding the iconic archaeologist.
We learned a few weeks back that David Koepp would return to write the script despite churning out a stinker with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It’ll be interesting to see how Indy 5 is handled, especially considering the critical mauling its predecessor received.
Franchise producer Frank Marshall recently spoke at CinemaCon and said that the story would be a continuation of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which will raise a few eyebrows. The previous Indiana Jones movies have existed predominantly as their own standalone adventures, not particularly following an overarching story.
Marshall said: “It’s all about the story. I think both in the Jason Bourne series and on Indiana Jones, we are not going to do the Bond thing. We think those characters are iconic, and those are the only actors who can play that.”
When we last saw Indiana Jones, he was a newly married man, looking to settle down with a family and you would think that ignoring that would be the wrong movie. However, there’s only one problem: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a truly awful story and should be eradicated. Don’t get us wrong, we’re still very much invested in this movie but we just hope Disney don’t make the same storytelling techniques as Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We want more Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade, not the meandering mumbo-jumbo of the fourth installment.
Indiana Jones co-creator George Lucas hasn’t been confirmed as involved but we’ll wait and see if he comes up with a story. Steven Spielberg is currently prepping Ready Player One (May 30, 2018), and he’ll next direct The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which will see him re-team with Bridge of Spies and The BFG star Mark Rylance.
