Another day, another story relating to Rey’s parentage in Star Wars (yes, we will keep reporting it because it’s interesting to us and, if you’re reading, it’s interesting to you too!) On Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival, J.J. Abrams revealed some rather intriguing details pertaining to the matter that drew sharp intakes of breath from the audience.
“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII,” Abrams told the audience. “So I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too.”
However, after the frenzy of media reports following Abrams’ comments, the director clarified and said this: “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world,” he said.
We’re not too convinced about his clarification though. Sounds like a cover-up.
So, if Rey’s parents did not appear in The Force Awakens, that would certainly rule out Luke Skywalker (long rumoured to be her father, of course). It would also strike down the possibility of Rey being the offspring of Leia, too, with theories emerging that the two characters were connected after the novelisation of The Force Awakens revealed that Leia gave Rey a “mother’s embrace” before she went off to find Luke.
Abrams also divulged an interesting nugget which bridges Star Wars: The Force Awakens to the original trilogy: Mark Hamill was the exact same age as Alec Guinness when the British actor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope.
“Getting to Luke was the whole story,” he said, adding that Hamill was initially “a little resistant” to his character’s presence (or lack thereof) in the film and wondered if the big reveal at the end would seem like a joke.
The mystery surrounding Rey’s parents remains as great as ever. Chime in with your thoughts as to who they are below!
