Following 19 years of service and some of the most prolific runs and controversial creations at Marvel comics, with both Miles Morales and Riri Williams to his credit, one time indie sensation Brian Michael Bendis has, as of this morning, defected to DC.
This was announced via a tweet from DC, who revealed: “We are beyond thrilled to welcome Brian Michael Bendis exclusively to the DC family with a multiyear, multifaceted deal.”
Bendis started out on Indie hits AKA Goldfish and Jinx, and was perhaps one of the most invigorating writers at post-bankruptcy Marvel during the late 90s, with definitive runs on Marvel Knights, Daredevil and Alias, along with lengthy runs on Ultimate Spider-man and Avengers. He changed the face of the publisher with his new takes on Spider-man and Iron Man, though in later days he was decried by fans as a divisive influence and premotor of identity politics in storylines.
Some fans took to twitter to congratulate the decision and celebrate Bendis legacy, or for others, breathe a sigh of relief that the latter day controversial writer is finally gone from their favourite titles. As for Bendis himself, he had no hard feelings and was positive about his future, tweeting;
This is real. I love you all. Change is good. Change is healthy. I am bursting with ideas and inspirations. Details to come! Stay tuned! https://t.co/S1x5JDmGTt

And “They’re my friends. I’m madly in love with them for their coolness.”
DC’s chief creative officer Geoff Johns soon sent this to Bendis:
Very excited to have my friend @BRIANMBENDIS over at @DCComics — Cannot wait to finally do something together, pal! https://t.co/ANZAMGjbi4

Conspiracy theories are already swirling about Disney cleaning house and what titles Bendis will work on for DC next, but as of now the move seems amicable from Marvel to DC from one of Marvel’s most tenured writers.
We’re wondering if perhaps we’ll see Bendis working on the movies… after all, that’s where Geoff Johns spends most of his time these days.
As for his former employers, Marvel, they released the following statement: “Brian is a great partner and has contributed incredible stories and characters to the Marvel Universe over the years. We appreciate his creativity and professionalism, and we wish him the best on his future projects.”
Just says enough, really…
