The Rise Of The YouTuber: Will The Phenomenon Ever End?

It feels as people we’re more social than ever before. However, much of that engagement now comes online. Whether it be playing around on Instagram, FaceTiming friends or getting involved with WhatsApp groups, engaging via a connection is big business.

And that even extends to watching people live stream directly to us. YouTubers are huge stars today making huge amounts of money. That concept is still relatively new, while on the other side of that coin adult webcammers found that gap in the market long ago. But can it last forever?

The number of live sex cam sites, YouTube channels and Twitch accounts are increasing at a rate of knots, creating loyal fan bases that are only increasing.

The Secret To Their Success

The secret to the success of live streaming is quite simple – they offer an air of relatability to us.

The most successful cam girlsare those who are the typical girl next door type, giving them a sense of attainability to the average man, while Twitchers streaming games and YouTubers discussing daily life offer that sense of familiarity.

For example, Zoella is just your average British girl and because of that millions relate to her and subscribe to her channel.

It’s that authenticitywhich we love, particularly at a time when every movie star looks picture perfect and every pop star lives a life completely out of reach to the average Joe.

They also offer bitesize opinions and chunks of information, which in today’s day and age is more important than ever before.

That’s led to the biggest YouTubers being able to take advantage and earn in the millions from companies wishing to use their influence.

 But is it sustainable?

The Future Of Youtubers

It will be interesting to see how this trend continues over the coming years. For the most part, the superstars who are live streaming are young adults and they’re watched by young teenagers and young adults.

Naturally, as that generation ages there is a possibility that the genre will be grown out of, lowering viewers and ultimately kill the industry.

What’s more, as more and more are offered products to promote, increasing their wealth there’s the danger that the authenticity in which people crave could well be lost.

Over the next few years we will certainly see if it is an industry that is here to stay. If we see a new crop of stars becoming popular, it could well be, while the current stars of YouTube and Twitch may feel the need to adapt to stay relevant to its original fans.

Do that and there’s no reason we can’t be engaging with YouTubers into their 40s and 50s. They just need to find the right angles to stay authentic, relevant and appealing.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
