So while the world was going mad about the goodness coming out of SDCC at the weekend, FOX out of the blue announced that creator Joss Whedon and new showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen were bringing back Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
And word spread quickly that it would be reboot with Buffy recast, this time as a black girl and everyone – us included – got a little annoyed.
Not because there was a black slayer – there was several black slayers in the original show and they all rocked – but because, as was the case with Ghostbusters, it was an unnecessary reboot.
The very concept of Buffy The Vampire Slayer was that as each slayer died, another was called, leaving it prime for the casting of an actress of any age or colour to step up and join the fight against the forces of evil.
In fact, as you may recall, at the end of Buffy it was set up that every girl was potentially a slayer, so the door was wide open for it anyone to be the next generation of slayer.
So, it’s for this reason and this reason only that noses were out of join.
In fact star Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris in the original series a few days ago stated that he believed the new show would be in-universe is continuing stories:
Reading the articles I’m pretty sure the new Buffy is a reboot (continuing stories) and not a remake (new actors playing the original roles).
If it’s a remake (as defined above), will you watch @BuffyTVS now that you know @joss is involved?

And now, Monica Owusu-Breen has taken to the interwebs to put our collective nerd minds at rest.. the new series WILL be a continuation/sequel to the original series!
Yeah! And with Joss Whedon back on board we’re pretty excited. Now we can be excited for who will step up to fight the good fight.
Here’s what she had to say – and we are very, very grateful:
“So here we are, it’s twenty years later and maybe it’s time to meet a new Slayer…”
And with these words the internet took a collective sigh of relief and everything was right with the world.
Now, if we could just see cameos from Buffy, Xander, Giles and the rest of the (extended) Scooby Gang, plus a definitive resolution to the ending of Angel, then we’re all happy and good.
