New Red Dwarf project to film later this year with full cast returning

June 17th, 2024 by Marc Comments

The boys from the Dwarf are returning to our screens and all is right with the world… for now.

The news comes as a surprise as Red Dwarf hasn’t been on our screens since Dave’s last series in 2020 but it’s been confirmed by Kryten actor Robert Llewellyn who said: “Yes, we are making more. I can’t believe I’ve agreed to do it, I’m insane. I’m much too old!”

The return will be a feature-length adventure for the crew of the lost mining ship which will be split over three parts and will begin filming this October with it set to air on Dave in 2025.

“We knew we were going to do more Red Dwarf and we’re actually now doing it in the middle of October to the middle of November this year. A 90-minute special, three half-hours,” Llewellyn went on.

Llewellyn has also confirmed Craig Charles would be back as Dave Lister, Chris Barrie is returning as hologram Arnold Rimmer and, of course, Danny John-Jules will be there too as The Cat.

While nothing is known about the story of the feature, co-creator Rob Grant revealed to Radio Times that he was working on a prequel featuring a young Rimmer and Lister: “I can’t say too much, but it’s a prequel and we’re very excited about it. Hopefully we’ll see it soon!”

‘I have lots of more ideas for the future of Red Dwarf,’ says writer

It’s not clear if this is what the new project it, however, as Grant and other co-creator Doug Naylor had a legal battle over the show which ended in them both being able to develop projects with the characters separately. with their joint statement saying: “Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and the wish each other the very best.”

Hmmmmmm… we are at a point where we could see two versions of Red Dwarf happening at the same time; could we see Grant’s prequel series while Naylor continues with later adventures? Only time will tell be for now, I’m just excited to have the foursome back on our screens in the near future.

Thoughts? Let me hear them…

He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
