Ok, so, I’ll not lie… I really hoped that Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was, as rumour seemed to suggest, done with Star Wars and was no longer attached to his new trilogy.
On top of that, given how bad the final season of Game Thrones was, I was also hoping that show runners David Benioff & Dan Weiss may have lost interest in Star Wars and the trilogy they too were supposedly set for.
And now there’s news.
It’s not great news, truth be told.
First the better of the two bits of news: David Benioff & Dan Weiss will no longer be penning their trilogy but will rather be writing a treatment for the trilogy and only writing one instalment, meaning they won’t be very hands-on – mostly due to a $250 million Netflix deal they’ve just signed.
As for Rian Johnson, though, he seems confident he still has a job at Disney/Lucasfilm: “I think that the fun and challenging part of it is to dive in, figure out what’s exciting and then figure out what it’s going to be,” he says
“We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’ films is figuring out, ‘what’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”
A lot can happen in a few years… so let’s not give up hope yet. At least he’s not touching Luke, Leia, Han and the gang this time.
Or am I too harsh?
Let me know…
