NYCC 2026 – Nic Cage says that no matter what the director says, he’s not back for National Treaser 3

Well, Nicholas Cage has just put poor old Jon Turteltaub in his place as only he can.

You may recall that in August, director Turteltaub confirmed on the National Treasure podcast that the third National Treasure movie was written and ready to go and, best of all, Nic Cage was back as Ben Gates: “It’s happening. You’re the first people I have said this out loud to. I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop.”

He went on to say that unless something happened Cage, the movie was getting made: “It’s ‘Hollywood real’, meaning things could happen. Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no National Treasure 3. If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a National Treasure 3. Welcome to Hollywood.”

Tidbit:

Speaking at NYCC about Spider-Noir, Cage may have hinted as to why the (seemingly) planned season 2 never happened: “Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI,” Cage said.
“I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to let him use AI on ‘Spider Noir.’ I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.”

So, that’s great, right?

Well, earlier today, speaking at NYCC, Cage threw a spanner in the works and said that he’s not back yet… but he has a good idea for what the third movie could be!

Referring to Turteltaub doing the interview, Cage said: “You got to get these microphones out of these directors’ hands… Ben Gates is going after the Epstein files. I’ll make that movie.”

Lol!

I’m sure Cage is in talks for the movie, Turteltaub wouldn’t say it completely unfounded, but it seems we’re not going scroll hunting just yet. And while it’s disappointing, it’s hard to argue it’s not at least a bit funny.

The series kicked off in 2004 with Cage playing Gates, a treasure hunter who learns there is a secret clue that leads to treasure in the Declaration of Independence. The movie was not a critical success but it found its fandom and led to a sequel appearing in 2007 with Cage returning to hunt down the Book of Secrets, a mysterious book passed down by ex US Presidents and containing, well, secrets that the government wouldn’t want revealed.

For years, fans have been trying to get a third movie and all seemed lost in 2022 when a Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History, starring Lisette Olivera, appeared in an effort to pick up where the second movie left off and to take over the franchise. Luckily, the three people who watched it, thought it was a load of old balls, and the calls for Cage to return got even louder. The series was cancelled after one season.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
