So, we have a cool little detail from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad which links it to the Birds of Prey movie in a way that, while we suspected, has now been confirmed.
Mild spoilers ahead:
Fans will recall that The Suicide Squad opens (watch it below) with Savant, played by Michael Rooker, in prison, bouncing a ball around the room in a presumable homage to Steve McQueen in The Great Escape. While he’s throwing the ball – his skill is he’s a crack marksman and the ball is hitting numerous Xs on the walls before landing back in his hand – a small, yellow canary lands in front of him and after pondering, he bounces the ball around one last time with it smashing into the bird, killing it dead.
Now, many of us assumed this was a nod to Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary in Birds of Prey as Savant is, in the comics, a BoP villain.
And it seems that yes, it was indeed.
Yesterday DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee Tweeted (here): “A few spoiler-y things to note when you do [check out The Suicide Squad] which made this film extra special in my eyes. The opening scene w/Savant has him killing a bird… a yellow bird. Yes, a canary. Wonder who locked Savant into Belle Reve?”
While there are numerous links to the wider DCEU in The Suicide Squad, it’s always the subtle ones that I think hit best.
Did you spot this in the movie? Did you spot any others? Let us hear them, guys…
