Umbrella Academy gets fourth and final season as showrunner moves to Horizon Zero Dawn series

We’ve learned that The Umbrella Academy, one of our favourite shows right now, has got the go ahead for one more season… but, sadly, it’s the final season.

Yes, Netflix has granted the series one last, big goodbye to fans and I, for one, am glad to hear it’s getting the chance to wrap up the whole adventure properly.

The series stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya and Colm Feore as a family, well, extended family, of super-powered individuals who hop time, reality and beds in the craziest adventures you could imagine and at the end of season 3 they all found themselves in a radically changed reality where they have no longer got their abilities which, well, let’s just say we’re happy we’ll see resolved.

Showrunner Steve Blackman says of the final season: “The siblings losing their powers isn’t going to be the only oddity in this timeline. There are new enemies who want to see them wiped out of existence, but how do they manage without their powers? Is there even a way to get them back? The stakes have never been greater.”

However, as one door closes and all that.

Blackman is no moving on to two new series, one of which is based on a wildly successful videogame.

“Horizon Zero Dawn,” Blackman goes on, “Is an exceptionally well-crafted game with wonderful characters not often seen in the rank-and-file of the gaming world. Guerrilla Games has created an incredibly lush and vivid world of man and machine who find themselves on a collision course to oblivion. Their salvation comes in the form of a young female warrior named Aloy, who has no idea she’s the key to saving the world. Suffice it to say, yes, Aloy will be a main character in our story. My writing partner on this, Michelle Lovretta, and I are thrilled to be able to expand this remarkable IP into a series for all types of viewers.”

As well as that, he’s overseeing space adventure Orbital: “The men and women who live on the most expensive and complex machine ever built — the International Space Station — live in the unforgiving vacuum of space. There is no Uber to call when things go bad. They can only rely on trust for each other. When that trust erodes, every action they choose can have dire consequences.”

Saying the series promises “black humor, characters who live on the edge and wild action sequences [but no aliens],” we reckon it’s sounding pretty great.

So, while we’re sorry to hear Umbrella Academy is coming to an end, we’re already excited for Horiaon Zero Dawn and Orbital. Onwards and, indeed, upwards.
