Wait… is Stuart Fails to Save the Universe – and by default, The Big Bang Theory – now officially part of the DC Multiverse?!

Well, bizarrely, the answer seems to be ‘yes’.

During this week’s episode of the Big Bang Theory spinoff, Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and his gang of losers head to Gotham City and stumble across some of DC’s most well-known faces (Sheldon would pass out if he knew), The Flash and Mr Freeze.

Yes, in the episode, 30 Rock and Scrubs star Andy Ridings pops up as the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick and he’s fighting against Fuller House star Eric Allan Kramer as Mr Freeze – yes, we too are wondering why it wasn’t Flash’s enemy Captain Cold, but Freeze’s costume was a banger, so we’re not complaining.

But lads, how spot-on is that Golden Age Garrick outfit?

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has already been greenlit for a second season but Penn says: “The writers’ room hasn’t started yet. Next week, we’re going to get back together and start talking about this,”

However, it seems that Flash wasn’t the first choice of the show’s hero. Keen-eyed viewers will have noticed that the episode if called Spoiler: We Couldn’t Get Green Lantern, and that is indeed the truth.

In the new episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the show’s leads travel to Gotham City and cross paths with the Golden Age Flash (Andy Ridings) and the villainous Mr. Freeze (Eric Allan Kramer). Both characters have comic-accurate costumes, but Jay Garrick wasn’t the show’s first choice of hero.

The episode’s title is “Spoiler: We Couldn’t Get Green Lantern,” and it turns out that was true. Why? Well, you can blame DC Studios’ Lanterns, which recently dropped one heck of a midseason trailer.

Co-creator Zak Penn says: “They [DC Studios] told us we couldn’t have him because of [HBO’s] Lanterns, which I understood.

“Chuck [Lorre] was a little grumbly about it, but Bill and I pointed out to him that Flash was actually perfect. If we needed something that’s going from dimension to dimension, Flash worked even better than Green Lantern.”

Given that Sheldon (Jim Parsons) in The Big Bang Theory was obsessed with The Flash and even dressed as him in a Halloween episode, right, I would imagine fans would think the Flash connection is perfect.

Penn goes on: “It was half opportunity and half what they encouraged us, but Golden Age Flash appealed to us a lot, just because he’s kind of silly. No offense to Golden Age Flash. Bill [Prady] and I were laughing a lot [about] the whole notion that Gotham City isn’t where New York City is, which makes no sense. All those things were just kind of built-up humor and things that we felt about comic books.”

On Flash fighting Mr Freeze, he’s very in on the joke: “So, the next obvious decision was, in terms of a villain, let’s put the villain who seems right and that people know more, and then have our characters comment on the fact that he’s the wrong villain for this piece.”

On the possibility of more DC characters coming into the series? Seems Penn “would be shocked” if it wasn’t an idea that came up again at some point, given the multiverse angle of the series.
