He may be about to own Christmas ’26, but Johnny Depp is possibly preparing to return to one of his most famous roles… Captain Jack Sparrow.
While there’s been talk of him returning to the iconic role for a few years now, not to mention word on reboots starring Karen Gillan Margot Robbie, it now seems that Depp is eyeing a return which, make no mistake, is what the franchise’s fans- and the general public- really want to see.
Having played Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean movies between 2003 and 2017, Depp said: “If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the Pirates franchise… the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note.
Looks like Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean reboot set for filming next year
“I will go to work with [Producer Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”
We’ve known for a while now that a new movie in the series was being written and it was hoped Depp would return, with Bruckheimer saying just last year: “We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”
Karen Gillan Disney’s choice to lead new Pirates of the Caribbean franchise?
It seems inevitable that Depp will return at least for one more outing as Captain Jack Sparrow and I would imagine that there are a lot of eyes on Ebenezer this Christmas to see how well it does before a sixth Pirates is announced.
Depp may be a controversial figure at the minute, but there’s no doubt he has a lot of fans and his climbing aboard a pirate ship once more would be to the delight of a lot of people. And that includes me, although I am not going to pretend that the Pirates franchise diminished in box office and quality as they went on… but I am a sucker for a big return.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
