Looks like Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean reboot set for filming next year

Our friends over at World of Reel are reporting that the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is set to begin production next year in St Vincent but franchise star Johnny Depp is not expected to be returning as iconic Captain Jac Sparrow.

In 2022 producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that there are two new Pirates movies in development to soft reboot the series and bring it forward without Depp. saying: “We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.”

The one without Robbie is eyeing Doctor Who star Karen Gillen, left, to lead, more recently, Bruckheimer said: “It’s two different movies. We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot [Robbie] one, too.”

The script comes from The Young Woman and the Sea’s Jeff Nathanson and it features what Bruckheimer describes as “a great, great third act”.

Look, there’s no denying Robbie’s star power, but honestly, the Pirates franchise was dying before Depp was stood down and I see this being another failed reboot that will be used as another way to say movie fans are sexist or whatever but the cold truth is, without Depp I don’t see any point in continuing this franchise, I’m not even convinced there was any point with him.

As my daughter said, “Why? Captain Jack Sparrow IS the Pirates movies.”

Hard to argue, really.
