We’re only a few weeks out from our return to the world of 28 Years Later and director Danny Boyle has been dropping some hints (and not so much hints) about what we can expect.
Oh, and there are some new character posters at the bottom of the page if you’re so inclined.
The first big reveal is an answer to the question of Jim’s return to the series, played by Cillian Murphy in the original movie, Jim’s return has been expected for a long time, but it seems that, as we reported a while back, we have another while to wait: “Well, it’s three films, a trilogy of films which have connecting characters,” Boyles says, before saying of Murphy, “He is in the second one. I shouldn’t give away too much. I’ll get killed.”

The second movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is directed by Candyman’s Nia DaCosta and is produced by Boyle and Alex Garland and hits screens in January.
But Boyle teases that the plan is a trilogy, but it really depends on how the new movie does, although he does confirm Murphy is on for a third movie too: “Although each story completes itself, there’s a handover section to the next film as well. So it’s very ambitious. We haven’t got the money for the third one yet. It will depend on how the first one does, I guess. But hopefully if we do ok, they’ll give us the go-ahead for the money and for the third one. Everybody’s standing by for that, really. Including Cillian.”
Interestingly, it seems that he would also like to continue his pattern of directing every second movie in the series, having directed the first and now third, he’s keen to come back for the final part of the trilogy too: “I would love to, yes. God willing… but also it depends how the first film does. You might not want me to. You never know. You’ve got to realize that there are plenty of alternatives.”
Ah, I’d say it’s a safe bet we will want him to return.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all…
