It looks like the Monsterverse is set to have a rival in the Godzilla and the giant monsters stakes…
In a new interview, Keiji Ota, Toho’s Chief Godzilla Officer, has discussed future plans for the King of the Monsters, with Godzilla Minus Zero on the horizon, and it seems that they have their sights set on a massive Kaiju Universe similar to what Legendary is doing with Godzilla and Kong in the Monsterverse movies and shows.
Currently dubbed Godzilla World, the plan is to develop a shared monster universe, with the directors of Shin Godzilla and the aforementioned Godzilla Minus Zero named as the inspiration for what’s planned.
So, the Monsterverse only done with a fully straight face, then?
WATCH: The teaser for Godzilla: Minus Zero is here and, well, it’s jawdropping
“In addition to the Godzilla films directed by people like Hideaki Anno (Shin Godzilla) and Takashi Yamazaki (Godzilla Minus One/Zero), if Toho creates the original concepts ourselves, we’ll be able to strategically roll out spin-offs as well,” says Ota.
“Just like Legendary has its ‘Monsterverse’, we’re advancing plans to create what we’re calling ‘Godzilla World’.”
With the recent teaser for Godzilla Minus Zero teasing Godzilla heading to America and a possible second monster, my mind is blown at the prospect of a whole Monsterverse set in that world… I love the Legendary Monsterverse, but Godzilla Minus One absolutely blew away anything that Legendary did in terms of spectacle, emotion, and massive monster energy.
So, thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.
Additionally confirmed out of CinemaCon, Ryunosuke Kamiki, the hero who faced Godzilla’s terror in Godzilla Minus One, returns as Koichi Shikishima, and is joined by Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, who miraculously survived Godzilla’s first attack on Tokyo.
As a project Filmed For IMAX, Godzilla Minus Zero was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimised in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens. Fans can look forward to seeing Godzilla presented to all-new terrifying heights, making Godzilla Minus Zero in a true cinematic event not to be missed.
