For many years, there have been rumours and rumblings of a reboot of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell’s other iconic movie, Escape from New York, and now, it seems like it’s actually happening.
300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder is set to write and direct a new, reimagining of the classic dystopian sci-fi thriller, which saw Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a mercenary sent into a futuristic New York (1997!), a fallen, walled-in wasteland, to rescue the President of the United States, whose plane crashed in what used to be Manhattan.
It sits alongside The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China as Carpenter and Russell’s holy trilogy of untouchable sci-fi/fantasy.

Word is the idea will be shopped around to studios in the coming weeks, and Snyder will be aiming to release it on the big screen with Carpenter attached in an exec producer role.
While little is known about the movie, THR reports that Snyder’s plan is ‘to make a more down and dirty movie, using plenty of practical effects or locations like he did when he remade Dawn of the Dead as his feature debut, than something more overtly slick, such as his later superhero hits, including Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’.
Over the years, many directors have tried to crack the nut remaking this classic, with the likes of Len Wiseman (Ballerina) and Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) coming close, but never making the cut. Can Snyder actually do it?
Well, the report states that Studio Canal want this to be a big movie for them, with a franchise being the goal, so they’re certainly keen, but I must say that, while I enjoy Snyder as a director, him being attached to write worries me a great deal, especially after his last two efforts at making franchises, Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead becasue, well, look, there’s no reason to be mean, but man…

But, for the sake of balance, probably his best movie to date was the remake of George Romero’s superb Dawn of the Dead, so there’s always hope. As a director, I think he could do great things with a movie like Escape from New York, but I really don’t want him writing it.
Also, what we really want is Kurt Russell back as Plissken because, let’s be honest, 75 or not, the man is in amazing shape, plus, his son, Wyatt, is sitting there too, screaming to play a young Plissken. But I know, it won’t happen. But a Nerd can always dream.
So, Zack Snyder’s Escape from New York… thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
