Danny Boyle says next 28 Years Later movie to film next year

The story isn’t over yet… as we now know for sure that the last chapter is coming.

We knew going into 28 Years Later in 2025 that it was a planned start to a trilogy set in this terrifying world that kicked off in Danny Boyle’s superb 28 Days Later in 2002, but after the second movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, failed to set the box office on fire, there was some doubt that we’d ever really find out how all this ended.

Well, now you can relax because the third – and probably final – movie is set to film next year.

Director of the original movie and 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle, has spoken about the new movie and confirmed that it’s happening, but they missed the window to start filming, so it’ll be next year.

“We ran out of time,” Boyle said.

Tidbit:

Young star Alfie Williams, who played Spike in 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, had confirmed in the middle of May that he was returning for the third time by posting an image of him training with a bow and arrow and writing “It’s Great to be Back! “

“Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time – so it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year.”

Excitingly, he confirmed that Alex Garland has once again written the script, saying: “There’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex has done a wonderful script for it.”

While it’s not known how the third movie (in this trilogy) will wrap up, we do expect it to tackle the idea that the infected can be cured and the world might possibly be put back to rights.

It’s also the plan to have Cillian Murphy, whose career was kicked off by the first movie, way back in 2002, will be the centre of the story as Jim, the survivor we followed throughout the first movie, and met again briefly at the end of The Bone Temple.

I’m sort of ashamed to admit that I haven’t had a chance to see The Bone Temple yet, though it is on my ‘watch soon’ list, but I have been a big fan of the franchise ever since the first movie and have enjoyed all instalments so far, so I will be all caught up by the time Boyle, Garland and Murphy wrap the story up.

And honestly, I can’t wait to see how that plays out.

So, we’re getting the final chapter in the 28 Days Later story, thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
