EXCLUSIVE: Ernie Hudson discusses future of Ghostbusters: ‘more scary, like the originals’

If there’s one franchise I love above all, it’s Ghostbusters, and if there’s one thing I love reporting on more than anything else, it’s Ghostbusters news, and I have some exclusive news about what might be coming next in the franchise, and it’s from one of the Ghostbusters themselves, Mr Ernie Hudson.

While scrolling in the Ghostbusters Fan page on Facebook, I came across a post from a contributor that metioned he’d met Hudson last weekend at Supernova Comic and Gaming Con, Gold Coast, Australia and the actor, who is an absolute gent, talked briefly about the future of Ghostbusters after 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire which didn’t perform as well as hoped (but gave many fans so much fun stuff).

Check out the original post on Ghostbusters Fans on Facebook:

The post, by Chay Mead, says that he chatted with Hudson, who confirmed that “a new script is being written with new writers away from the family-friendly Ghostbusters dynamic. The story just didn’t work in Frozen Empire. Needs to more scary like the originals and Afterlife.”

So, I reached out to Chay, and he was happy to further discuss with me what Hudson had told him at the Con.

Chay said that Hudson disclosed that he wasn’t entirely happy with Frozen Empire, saying that while it went in the right direction, it was a bit too far leftfield and focused a little too much on the mother and family story and not enough on Ghostbusting.

Exciting new details on Netflix’s animated Ghostbusters movie and series

He felt that the Pheobe arc wasn’t handled as well as it could have been and that ultimately there was just too much going on in the movie.

In fairness to Hudson, these are all complaints that the fans, too, had. Although we all agree that Frozen Empire did a great job of making Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore the centre of the Ghostbusters world, something that was long overdue for the actor and character.

So, with all this in mind, yes, there is a new script being developed, and it will focus more on the ghosts and the scares and less on the family dynamic. He also said that additional writers are being sought to develop the new ideas further.

MOVIE REVIEW: A [more personal than usual] review of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

It’s exciting to know that more Ghostbusters is in development – aside from the animated series and movie – and reading into what Hudson is saying here, I don’t for a second think he’s saying that the new Ghostbusters cast of Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard will be replaced but rather that next time we see them, they will be a fully fledged Ghostbusting team, something that did seem to be squarely set up at the end of Frozen Empire.

Look, I love ALL the Ghostbusters movies – yes, I even have a soft spot for Answer the Call – and I accept that Frozen Empire wasn’t what it could have been but it expanded the world in many ways with a Ghostbuster Q-Branch and even bringing new elements like magic and that there were teams fighting the supernatural long before the Ghostbusters… there’s just so much great lore in there, even if it didn’t quite make a fully satisfying whole.

Anyway…

The good news is that Ghostbusters is still alive and well, and with this news out there now, can we perhaps expect some sort of announcement this June on Ghostbusters Day? Here’s hoping…

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!

“There will be one,” Aykroyd talks new Ghostbusters movie, animated series… and is Casper canon?
