Could we be getting ready for the return of Billy Bob Thornton’s Willie T Stokes in a third Bad Santa movie?
After Bad Santa 2, do we even want it?
Well, yes and yes.
Ok, yes, Bad Santa 2 was an absolute travesty of a movie, but the first one is still the gold standard for tasteless, yet feel-good Christmas fare, and I would welcome a return to that, if it could be done.
Speaking at a promotional event of his hit TV series Landman, Thornton was asked if there might be a Bad Santa 3 and, surprisingly, he replied in the positive, saying he’d just heard the pitch for the third movie and it sounds like he’s heard a few, but this one might actually be good: “I just heard one about two weeks ago,” the star says.

“It’s the first one I’ve heard that really kind of made sense,” he goes on, “Not that we know we’re going to do it, but there is one that’s floating around out there that seems pretty good.”
At this stage, the first movie is over 23 years old (good Lord!) and was a black comedy that introduced us to Willie, a master thief who robbed stores on Christmas Eve:
Criminals Willie and Marcus disguise themselves as Santa Claus and his elf and travel across the country to major malls, using the goodwill people have toward Santa to rob the mall stores blind. The problem is, Willie can’t stand kids and it’s all he can do to keep himself from getting fired while on the job. Their plan still progresses beautifully until the two reprobates meet an introverted 8-year-old boy who thinks Willie is the real Santa Claus. Overweight, awkward, and the frequent target of bullies, the boy manages to arouse something like sympathy from Willie, who tries to give him some advice and develops something vaguely resembling Christmas spirit along the way.

Honestly, it’s a real treat and also, it feels like a movie that would never get made in this day where feelings, safe spaces and triggers seem to dominate. But man, I would love to see someone try again.
Honestly, the 2016 sequel, which introduced Kathy Bates as Willie’s mother, Sunny, was so bad that I honestly don’t even like to talk about it.
Yes, it’s that bad, and it was a failure critically and financially, which is probably why almost a decade later, we’re still waiting for the trilogy closer.
It’s nice to hear that there’s still chatter about another movie and that Thornton seems keen to return again, but I’m not sure this will ever happen.
But like any fan, despite the second movie, I will remain optimistic.
