Ahead of its debut on Sunday night, HBO and DC have dropped the opening five minutes of Lanterns and it looks great.

No evil shall escape their sight. Watch the official trailer now.

Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre star as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, alongside Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan and Ulrich Thomsen. The show is apparently inspired by True Detective and Slow Horses.

Tidbit:

DCU Brief has pieced together the full Lanterns/DCU timeline according to what this opening tells us:

1986: Hal Jordan gets the ring • 1996: Hal reveals to the public he is Green Lantern • 2016: John Stewart meets Hal to be trained • 2016-25: Guy Gardner gets his ring • 2025: Superman takes place • 2026: Lanterns present day

Green Lanterns are intergalactic peacekeepers who wear rings that give them extraordinary powers. The series follows experienced Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Nebraska, which leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.

Look, I know the DCU has its detractors but with this, Clayface in October and Supergirl getting a home release next week, the DCU is everywhere and I find that very exciting.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!

Lanterns arrives August 16 on HBO Max.
