Every year or two a movie comes along that deserves to be a massive hit and spawn sequels and spinoffs galore but for some reason, the audience just doesn’t show up – several movies come to mind here, with Transformers: One and this year’s criminally under-appreciated Masters of the Universe standing out – but another one is 2023’s excellent Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves.
However, just as there’s hope that Masters of the Universe, which is performing extraordinarily well on streaming, will get a sequel after all, so does it seem that we might just get that Honour Among Thieves sequel.
You may recall, back in 2024, star Chris Pine gave hope that there was a chance we’d get a sequel, saying: “The film did fine, but it didn’t do fine enough. That was the breaks in our business. For these films to do well, you have to make a billion, which is a lot.

“I think there’s a really good chance that we’ll make another one, because I think Hasbro owns the rights to it. I think there’s a good chance, and if they could figure out a financial way to make it work, I think they’ll do it.”
Well, that optimism is gathering momentum.
About a month or so ago, writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley revealed that a script for a second movie is already written, saying: “We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons And Dragons. We were hired to write it.

“We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons; they’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it.”
So, a bit of a downer there, but now, Goldstein has spoken about the sequel again and he’s keen to let the fans know that Hasbro is still trying to figure out a way to make this happen: “I think Hasbro is a big believer in it, and if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they’ll want to proceed. As are our producers.”

As if a potential Honour Among Thieves sequel isn’t enough, Netflix is moving ahead with its D&D live-action series, and it’s now confirmed to be based around the gothic horror side of the franchise, Ravenloft.
From creator John August and exec producer Alfonso Cuarón, the new series is described as a “prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance, Ravenloft and its Domains of Dread redefine adventure through character-driven stories of dark magic and supernatural intrigue.
“At the heart of the series, Ravenloft follows the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most notorious villains.”
There are no details on when the series is expected to arrive, but it sounds like Dungeons & Dragons is alive and well and not just on the game board.
Hi fellow co-writer Daley, also seems optimistic about a potential sequel: “It’s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one,” he said, “We fell in love with the characters, and there’s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn’t filled with exposition or introduction to this family that we’ve already become accustomed to. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice.”
There’s definitely a lot of love for the first movie – if you’ve not seen it, I seriously recommend it – and Daley believes that, as is often the case with these things, the timing of the release was a big part of the problem with the movie’s underperformace: “It was very much a product of not-so-great timing when the first movie came out,” he said, “It came out four days before the Super Mario movie, which broke records.
“It came out a month after Wizards of the Coast changed the official gaming license, prompting many D&D fans to boycott the game, and I don’t think the marketing did enough to tell people who weren’t already fans that this movie might be for them. Yeah, so it was a perfect storm of all of those elements, and we’ll see.”
Just as I do with Transformers: One and Masters of the Universe, I really hope they can find a distribution partner for a sequel.
Meanwhile, Daley and Goldstein wrote Mayday, which just hit Apple TV yesterday and is a lot of fun with a surprising amount of satire and heart, so I would recommend that for a couple of hours too.
