NYCC 2026: IDW Dark bringing The Purge, Happy Death Day and M3GAN to comics

Oh, exciting news for fans of Blumhouse’s horror catalogue as three of their franchises are about to get the IDW Dark treatment.

Following on from IDW Dark’s recent horror movie series based on Event Horizon, Sleepy Hollow, Smile and A Quiet Place, they’re now looking to expand the worlds of Blumhouse’s The Purge, M3GAN, and (most excitingly) Happy Death Day.

IDW Dark lead editor Heather Antos said of Blumhouse: “They have so many great franchises and titles and filmmakers and characters of which there is so much room to tell additional stories.”

The first title in the series will be based on the movie and TV franchise, The Purge, in which the USA sees all crime legalised for one night every year, this is known as Purge Night and it’s hell on earth for 12 hours, meaning there is no shortage of stories to tell.

This will be brought to life on the page by Eisner award–winning writer Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns, TMNT: Shredder) and artist Juan José Ryp (Wolverine: Blood Hunt, Ghost Rider: Vengeance Forever)..

On the new book, Watters said he was excited from the get-go: “I’m a really big horror nerd. It was my entry point into comics and geeky stuff to begin with.

“I can’t tell you anything about Star Trek, can’t tell you anything about Star Wars, but I can tell you about every Friday the 13th movie and I can rank them for you. So once we started talking about the fact that there was this Blumhouse stuff in the works, I immediately went, ‘Well, what about Purge?’”

Antos says the book will be a whole new corner of the Purge world than anything we’ve seen before on the big or small screen: “What we’re doing is an entirely new place and a new town, new environment than we’ve gotten to see explored in the Purge universe so far.”

Anos also said that with The Purge book, it’s important to remember that the ones taking part in Purge Night are the villains “and they need to remain the bad guys in the story”.

“That’s one of the things that excited both Dan and myself in exploring this world: finding different angles of the types of people who would engage in Purge Night and how they might not view themselves as the villains.”

Antos sat down with Happy Death Day creator Christopher Landon about what they can and can’t do in his perceived universe: “He got to tell me exactly what his plan is for Happy Death Day 3, should they ever get to do it [and if there are] ways in the comics that we can lean into that while also leaving room for them to tell the story that they want to tell should they get to?”

While there’s nothing to add so far on the M3GAN comic, Antos called the killer robot “a comic book superstar”.

I’m a big fan of the Happy Death Day movies and am still hoping we get to see Landon’s long-awaited third movie and I would be a liar if I said The Purge isn’t something of a guilty pleasure here at FTN HQ, so this is exciting news.

Along with the already out there Event Horizon, Sleepy Hollow and A Quiet Place books, IDW Dark’s horror universe is growing impressively and is definitely something to be excited about for horror and comic fans alike.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
