The DCU has found its next big power couple as co-boss Peter Safran confirms that they have found their Mr Miracle and Big Barda.
Safran, currently doing press for Clayface, the DCU’s first hardcore horror entry, and has been talking about the DC universe’s upcoming adventure and he has revealed that The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson will play Scott Free and Blade Runner 2049’s Mackenzie Davis, left, will be Big Barda: “[creator] Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns and he adapted his book Mr Miracle fully on his own, wrote all eight episodes and I think it’s just dynamite.”
It’s believed that Hutcherson and Davis will play the duo in live-action if/when they ever appear outside the animated show, as DCU boss James Gunn has said his plan was to use the same actors in animation, live-action, games and anything else that appears when possible.
Safran goes on to say that, while there’s no date for the show confirmed yet, it’s likely to get a 2028 release: “We haven’t actually announced a date for it. We’re very advanced on it. I mean, we’ve seen animatics of the whole season. But I think we’ve always thought of it as ‘28.” There will be eight 30-minute episodes.
New details on The People V Gorilla Grodd and where it fits in the DCU timeline
Safran goes on to talk about why the series is part of the DCU: “It’s always been one of my favorite of Tom King’s books. I find it so emotional. When he and I were talking early on, when James [Gunn] and I took this job, he told me that at every convention he goes to, a couple of people come up to him and say, ‘This book saved my life.’ The idea that, ‘How do you survive in today’s world, knowing that you’re never going to have the answers to the biggest questions out there?’ is just a really great commentary on the human condition and exploration to start with as the basis of the series. I think it’s a great on-ramp into the world of Scott Free and Big Barda, the New Gods. It’s a great way in to start telling those stories.”
King, confirms Safran, adapted the series himself from his comic series and it will be as epic a New Gods story as you’d hope: “Tom adapted the entire season himself from his book and did an extraordinary job. I’m really excited about the show because it’s about something. It’s really meaningful, and I think it’s going to move people. We always talk about ‘superhero’ in and of itself not being a genre, but there are genres underneath it; this is incredibly emotional but also action-packed because it’s got all the battles that are going on on the different planets. It’s a really exciting piece.
Creature Commandos season 2 will introduce Captain Atom UPDATED: Gunn teases Superman too!
“I think that Tom learned a huge amount creating and executive producing Lanterns, and I think he’s brought a lot of that new knowledge to the table when he adapted Mister Miracle.”
With Creature Commandos season 2 expected next year and The People Vs Gorilla Grodd likely to arrive then too, it makes sense that we won’t see Mr Miracle until 2028 but I have to say, I’m very excited to see the cosmic side of the DCU… I guess I’ll just have to wait another couple of years.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
Scott Free is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. So great, he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made quite a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques.
He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which has counted him among its ranks.
You might say Scott Free has everything, so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick except one… he has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.
